While some of us might assume that owning our own brand is fun and easy, Kittie Yiyi begs to differ, saying that it comes with heavy responsibilities and its own set of problems.
“The biggest challenges that I face as the owner of my own company are time and money. I’m funding my own clothing line, Kittie Yiyi, and I still have to work part-time to be able to roll the money in. At the same time, I also need to ensure that the efficiency in production and operation side of the company is well-maintained,” she explains.
Kittie discovered her passion for design when she was six years old after watching a model wear a beautiful dress on the runway in a TV programme. This prompted the young Kittie to cut the curtains in her house – much to her mum’s dismay – and turn them into dresses for her Barbie doll!
“Despite having many people telling me to give up my brand today, I choose not to. Reason being, my dad never wanted me to become a fashion designer – but after much convincing, he agreed to it,” she shares. “Fashion designing back then was quite expensive and despite not having the money, he worked extra hard just so that I could pursue my studies in Fashion Designing at the Raffles College of Higher Education in KL.”
After completing her studies, Kittie worked as an assistant designer for clothing label, Gallo by Thian (now known as Thian). Then she started to blog and create content before becoming a part-time stylist. In 2015, she made the brave decision to debut her irreverent and eccentric fashion creations at the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week and since then, Kittie has been coming up with many designs to rave reviews.
“For now, I’m going to stay put and pull through this hard time and continue to work hard,” she says. “My Spring/Summer 2020 collection that’s inspired by fruits and vegetables will be out this month. It depicts my change in lifestyle as I turn 30 next year. The silhouettes are going to be more structured with more ruffles but they’re going to be stiff and not appear very romantic. So make sure you keep your eyes peeled for it!”
