1. No distractions
Although it’s not your honeymoon, the whole purpose of going on a mini-moon is to getaway, without going too far away. While the town of Desaru is quite secluded, it’s still not hard to reach by car, which is why I think it’s the perfect mini holiday destination for city couples just because the chances of you bumping into someone you know are zero to none. For those of you who haven’t been to Johor, just imagine Desaru as Nusa Dua in Bali, where the town is a half an hours drive away and the only neighbouring property you’ll find next to Sand & Sandals is another beach resort.
This seclusion comes in handy when you’re supposed to actually be relaxing and not end up being distracted by tourist-related activities. Think waking up at noon to the sounds of birds chirping, ordering room service for lunch, going for a swim in the afternoon and strolling down the beach hand-in-hand while the sun sets. Lovely, isn’t it?
Besides that, you don’t even have to spend time wondering what to eat because the resort has got you covered with seven different dining options that’s located within the vicinity itself. There’s Fortune Kitchen, the all-day Dim Sum house I ate at that serves traditional yet fusion dim sum; Shiokaze Teppan, a Japanese restaurant offering teppanyaki with live cooking; Spices & Herbs, an all-day dining restaurant; The Café, for your caffeine fix and specialty cakes; Beach Hut Bistro, an outdoor option for when you’re craving the sea breeze; and Snuk Thai Street BBQ, a friendly Thai restaurant just a minute walk from the resort.
My favourite part was when the live band started to play at night as it made for the perfect time to lie on the many hammocks placed around the beach with my partner, close our eyes and just soak in the atmosphere.
