Malaysians Are Selfish When It Comes to Christmas

A new survey by Groupon has revealed the ugly truth.

what to get for christmas present

Honestly, as Malaysians, we’re a little surprised by this ourselves. In a new survey conducted by Groupon, Malaysians have been revealed to be more excited about receiving gifts as compared to fellow Singaporeans and Indonesians who prefer giving gifts. The global research also found that:

  • 62% of Malaysians prefer to receive than give during the holiday season
  • 87% of Malaysians admit they tend to have a ritual of buying themselves a gift during this season to ensure they get what they want
  • 7 out of 10 Malaysians, however, said they don’t reveal their wish list

For those of you who are still unsure of what to get for your loved ones (since either they like the element of surprise, or perhaps, feel paiseh to reveal what their heart truly desires), Groupon has also revealed what their Malaysian survey respondents said they would want most this festive season.

1. A staycation

Who wouldn’t love a mini getaway at a nice hotel (psst… we’re giving a 2D1N stay at a cool hotel HERE)? It’s a pretty safe choice, especially since more than 6 out of 10 Malaysians responded that a weekend getaway would be the ideal Christmas gift. This matches another finding that people prefer an experience over a product as a gift.

2. A delicious meal with the family

We totally felt the fuzziness in our hearts when we found out that the survey revealed 7 out of 10 Malaysians felt having a family meal is the most favourable activity during the festive season. So why not treat your loved ones to a fancy meal as a gift?

3. A relaxing spa day

As mentioned, since an experience is preferred over an item itself, a pampering day at the spa could be the ideal gift, according to 4 out of 10 Malaysians. Take it from us; we would LOVE this.

4. Tech gadgets

They’re a safe bet as 46% of Malaysians revealed they’d be pleased to receive the latest smartphones or gadgets as gift this holiday season.

5. Gift vouchers

If you really can’t imagine anything else that would be great for your family or friends, consider gift vouchers! They’re perfectly acceptable as nearly half of Malaysians said they would prefer receiving a gift card instead of getting something they didn’t want.
