When you’re deeply entrenched in a bad relationship, it can be hard to take a step back and acknowledge that you’re being mistreated. Eng Chuan suggests that one way of cultivating self-awareness is to treat your emotions as you would your physical body.
“When you feel unwell, you know your body is telling you that you are sick and need to see a doctor. The same goes for your emotional well-being,” Eng Chuan adds. “When you feel pain and sadness from a consistent source, it’s a signal telling you to pay attention.” Don’t ignore the signs – look at where they are pointing and acknowledge them. That’s the first step in understanding that you need to make a change.
