I’m so glad we went to that conference. It’s been the best 14 years of my life since, and he is truly my best friend, boyfriend, fiancé and now, husband.
Gayatri, 34, and James Unsworth, 33
It is a norm for students to experience puppy love but Gayatri and James took it to a different level. She was a Malaysian studying in Perth and he was an undergraduate in Brisbane; they met at a youth conference in Malacca in 2001.
“As I checked into my hotel for my conference, I spotted a bare-footed guy wearing bright-orange shorts walk past me and I muttered “Mat Salleh sesat”. The next day I discovered he was a delegate at the same conference,” says Gayatri. From a simple hello, their chats turned into long conversations over the next three days and as they departed for home, they exchanged numbers and promised to keep in touch.
“It’s been the best 14 years of my life since, and he is truly my best friend, boyfriend, fiancé and now husband,” says Gayatri. Despite not having faster Internet connection then and the time difference between Perth and Brisbane, Gayatri and James spoke to each other almost every night in between assignments and dinner.
Today, the couple is happily married with two kids. “I cannot imagine life without him, and I’m very thankful that he walked past me in those loud shorts and took the effort to say hello the next morning,” shares Gayatri.
