This will come as no surprise to you, but Malaysia is filled with truly talented people.

While perhaps there was a time where imported goods and foreign brands were all the rage, in this age of globalisation – where scoring international items is as easy as just sauntering to the nearest shopping mall – locally-made products are enjoying a resurgence in popularity.

Perhaps it’s a sense of patriotism or exclusivity – local products tend to be more small-scale and less easily available – but more likely, it’s a bit of both. Regardless, the fact remains that local-made, home-grown artisans are cool, and owning a piece of their work – whether it’s a handmade soap, notebook, furniture, fashion item – has become a great way to support and celebrate Malaysian creators.

No matter how impressive, successful, or even distant a brand may seem, there’s always one thing they have in common: and that’s the warm people behind them with their own stories in giving local craftsmanship new life.

In honour of Malaysia Day, we’d like to shine the spotlight on 4 local artisans that we think you should really get to know!
