There isn’t anyone in the fashion sphere who isn’t aware of Victoria’s Secret and their huge bevy of stunning Angels and lush fantastical runway shows. But in recent times, the brand and its annual Fashion Show have come under scrutiny for its chief marketing officer’s discriminatory comments about not casting plus-size and transgender models– a long-running issue that even cost them their star model, Karlie Kloss back in 2015.
Well, it seems like Victoria’s Secret has taken the backlash seriously because they’re making a step forward in diversity: by hiring their first ever openly transgender model.
At just 22 years of age, Valentina has already graced the covers of numerous international magazines such as Vogue Paris, Vanity Fair Italia, and Elle Mexivo while also appearing in campaigns by Moschino and L’Oréal. According to Business Insider, Valentina is also believed to have auditioned for the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, but was not hired.
Until now, of course! While details of her contract with Victoria’s Secret haven’t been announced yet, you can bet we’ll be watching the news for updates. We’re hopeful that Valentina’s achievement opens the door for more diverse casting and representation in fashion.
