Is your fave watchpiece looking a little worn out? Don’t despair coz you can totally bring it back to shiny life!
When it comes to choosing a watch for everyday wear, there’s no doubt that a watch with leather straps will be one of the perfect choices. But here’s the bad news: the average life span for leather is about one year if you do wear it daily.
Of course, like most things, you can prolong its life if you take extremely good care of your watch — and that includes regularly cleaning it. As a maker of beautiful leather accessories themselves, Fossil has shared with us the best step-by-step way for cleaning leather watch straps here:
1. Wipe the leather watchband with a dry cloth
Because moisture is easily trapped between a leather watchband and your skin, it is important to wipe both moisture and dirt from your leather watch strap regularly. Doing so before cleaning it more thoroughly ensures that the dirt won’t scratch the leather when scrubbing it. Be sure to use a soft cotton cloth or a microfiber jewellery cloth.
Did you know?
Excessive humidity is one of the causes of mildewing on leather.
2. Scrub the leather watchband with soap and water
Pat down the strap with a damp cloth. Then, put a small dab of mild, moisturizing hand soap on the cloth before scrubbing the watchband on both sides with it.
Avoid using a wet cloth or immersing/soaking the leather in water.
3. Rinse and dry the leather watchband with a cloth
Now, rinse and dampen the cloth with cold, clean water to wipe the watchband clean. Dry it thoroughly, and then allow the strap to just air-dry completely before wearing the watch.
Do not let it dry under the sun or next to heating appliances as excessive dryness may cause cracking.
4. Condition the leather watchband with leather conditioner
A leather conditioner helps to keep the material moist, which can prolong the life of a watchband, and make it look shiny and feel soft. You can buy professional leather conditioner quite affordably in various sizes and at various spots. Be sure to follow the instructions on the package though.
If you plan to use a leather cleaner, however, use with caution as it should only be used minimally — about four times a year. Also, don’t rub with it; instead, sponge gently until all grime and stains are absorbed.
Know how else you can prolong the life of your watch with leather straps? By NOT wearing the same leather strap every day. Before you get confused, we’re talking about Fossil’s latest item: the 30 strap Georgia.
