Costume jewellery can give you more options for a fraction of the cost of the real thing. And who doesn’t love picking up a lovely pair of earrings from a flea market for less than the cost of an iced latte? But costume jewellery can easily look cheap and gaudy if you don’t pick ’em right!
Here are 5 ways to make sure you’re choosing the right pieces. (And remember to keep them clean!)
1. Choose the right material
You aren’t going to be shelling out for 18-carat gold and sterling silver– that defeats the purpose of costume jewellery! But the key to authentic (and therefore expensive) looking costume jewellery? Its colour. Pieces made of or plated with darker metals tend to look more weighty and expensive than bright metals, which are prone to showing seams and other manufacturing defects. Always examine each piece carefully before you make a purchase, because it’s the little things that give it away.
