If the past seven seasons proved anything, it’s that Buddy Valastro is the godfather of cake decorating!
Italian-American celebrity chef Buddy Valastro was in Kuala Lumpur to promote the latest season of his reality television series, Cake Boss, and eager media fans like me were treated to an afternoon of buttercream and fondant with the maestro himself.
Whether you’re a fan of the show or not, Buddy has made Carlo’s Bake Shop (his family-owned business in Hoboken, New Jersey, USA) a household name over the years, thanks to his talent and passion for over-the-top edible cake art.
Married with four children, it was obvious that family means everything to this fourth-generation baker. During our Q&A at Starhill Gallery last Monday, all Buddy could talk about was how blessed he is to be doing his dream job every day and how his father would’ve been very proud. “My dad never told me I had to become a baker,” says Buddy. “Sometimes I finish a cake and I’ll just wish he was there to see it.”
With over 170 episodes and counting, Buddy and his team at Cake Boss still manage to succeed in making their audience’s jaw drop with their creations. From a Leaning-Tower-of-Pisa wedding cake in Season 1 to a toilet-bowl cake that actually flushed in Season 4, it was definitely hard to pick our favourites.
