Even if you’re not a beauty junkie, chances are that you’ve heard about Rihanna’s mega-hit beauty brand Fenty Beauty as it pretty much broke the internet last year. More than just another makeup brand with a famous name and face to it, Fenty Beauty has the goods to back it up. Each product is made with versatility in mind and is suitable for a variety of skin tones. Two of its major best-sellers are the foundation that’s available in 40 shades from Emma Stone fair to Anok Yai dark, and the poppin’ highlighters that show up on any complexion.

Now, to be a makeup artist for a brand by RiRi herself, we imagine that you’d have to have one hell of a personality with power makeup skills to match. And we weren’t wrong. The brand only has two Global Makeup Artists, Priscilla Ono and Hector Espinal, who have said that getting the gig was like joining a beauty version of American Idol with a gruelling process that took six months. We caught up with Hector on his first-ever visit to KL and he gives us a quick lesson on the right ways to wear highlighters.

How do you make highlighters look as natural as possible on the face?

“Always start your makeup application with the Fenty Face. This will create a soft-matte base, allowing whatever you have on top to look more subtle and natural. The great thing about our Killawatt Foil highlighters is that they have very buildable formulas so it allows you to build the layers easily without looking crazy.”

Is there such thing as putting too much highlighter on?

“Absolutely there is! Our Killawatt Foils can be quite deceiving because it comes across as beautiful and natural in pictures but have a hyper-metallic finish. When it mixes with your skin’s natural oils and the heat, the pigments are activated and the colour will get even more intense throughout the day. Always make sure that the base is nice and matte by using your blotting powder and subsequently add in the highlights where needed to avoid looking oily.”

There are different pairings of the highlighter duos – can you mix and match the colours or do you have to use them specifically according to their palettes?

“At Fenty Beauty, we want to reinforce the fact that makeup has no rules so you can definitely mix, match, play and do whatever you like! One of the things that Rihanna always says is that more is more. Layer it as much as you want. If you don’t like it, take it off and try something else. Have fun!”

More is more!” – Rihanna
