Muriwai Beach, New Zealand

Travel to the west coast at Muriwai Beach in New Zealand and feast your eyes on its black sand. The reason for the jet-black hue is due to a mixture of iron, titanium and other volcanic materials from the nearby Kaipara Volcano, which erupted millions of years ago. Located just 40 minutes from town, you can enjoy numerous activities there from surfing the huge waves to gannet watching as the area is known to have the largest colony of these birds. If you’re not an adrenaline junky, we think just chillin’ by the beach and soaking up the magnificent black beauty would be just fine. Funny how it aptly fits the All Black (New Zealand’s rugby team) reference!
