3 Acts To Watch Out For At The Rockaway Malaysia MotoGP Weekend

The biggest rock festival in Malaysia is making a return this weekend!

A first of its kind in our country, this year’s Rockaway will be split into two separate festivals – the Rockaway Malaysia MotoGP Weekend at Sepang International Circuit on October 29 and Rockaway The Saga Continues on November 19 at Extreme Park, Bukit Jalil.

Many might remember this festival for bringing in chart-toppers like Dashboard Confessional, Sum 41 and Paramore in the past. And with more than 20,000 concert-goers expected to turn up over the course of these two dates, we’re pretty sure it’s going to go down in history as yet another memorable day for all rock fans in Malaysia.

Here are the three acts we’re excited to see grace the B Hillstand stage this Saturday:

1. The Darkness

Even if you’re not a fan of rock music, you’re still probably going to recognise their breakout hit I Believe In A Thing Called Love from Taylor Swift’s Apple Music commercial which has since garnered over six million views. Formed back in 1999, this British rock band (currently comprising members Justin and Dan Hawkins, Frankie Poullain and Rufus Taylor) rose to fame in 2003 with their debut album Permission to Land.

Though both Justin and Frankie left the band sometime in the 2000s, the original four members finally reunited in March 2011 to play a few shows. With the success of the reunion, the band released a new song the following year and continued to perform at several festivals in the UK. Last year, they released their fourth studio album and have since had two different drummers to replace the original (Ed Graham).

2. Wolfmother

One for the heavy metal fans, this Sydney-originated band was founded by Andrew Stockdale, Chris Ross and Myles Heskett in 2004 where they were formerly signed to a local independent label called Modular Recordings. They later landed an international recording deal with Universal Music after their self-titled EP topped the charts in Australia.

In 2006, the band won their first Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. They celebrated with a worldwide tour but unfortunately split up in 2008. After many ups and downs, the band is still going strong as of today and currently consists of members Andrew Stockdale, Ian Peres and Alex Carapetis. Their latest album Victorious was released in February this year.

 3. Scorpions

Did you know that this German rock band has been around since 1965? No wonder they’re a household name even here in Malaysia! Described as ‘the heroes of heavy metal’ by the Rolling Stone magazine and referred to as the ‘Ambassadors of Rock’ by MTV, the band has probably gone through the most changes in members but with 18 studio albums and 28 awards under its name, it’s no surprise that it’s made it this far.

Today, Scorpions is made up of Rudolf Schenker, Klaus Meine, Matthias Jabs, Paweł Mąciwoda and Mikkey Dee. The band celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and released deluxe editions of seven albums, which included exclusive interviews with the band, numerous unreleased demo songs like Sugar Man and Taste of Love, alternative versions of their biggest hits like the acoustic version of Holiday and rare live concert recordings from their performance at the Monsters of Rock 1986 festival in Germany. Way to go, Scorpions!
