Kin Jong-hyun of superstar K-pop boyband SHINee has died. He was 27 years old.
Local news agencies first reported that the singer was found unconscious in a Seoul hotel room and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later passed away in the evening of December 18.
The news was later confirmed by SHINee’s agency, SM Entertainment in an official statement. “We’re sorry to deliver such heart-aching, unfortunate news,” the statement reads. “On December 18, SHINee member Jonghyun left our side unexpectedly. ”
Amidst reports that police are investigating suicide as a possibility, SM Entertainment urged fans and media to refrain from speculation about the circumstances surrounding Jong-hyun’s death. SHINee’s other four band members, Lee Jinki, Kim Kibum, Choi Minho, and Lee Taemin, are expected to attend his funeral.
Jong-hyun has been a member of SHINee since its inception 2008, and the band has been wildly successful in both Korea and overseas. Jong-hyun’s last public performance had been in a solo concert in Seoul on December 10.
We can’t imagine the shock and sorrow Jonghyun’s family, friends, and fans must be feeling.
