Ever dreamed of having your own Barbie doll that looks like you? Well US Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad realised her childhood dream by having her own one-of-a-kind Barbie doll as part of Barbie’s Shero Program.
This is the first hijab-wearing Barbie ever and it’s fitting considering the 2016 Olympic Bronze medalist for the Team Sabre is also the first Muslim-American to compete in the games whilst wearing the hijab.
“Thank you @Mattel for announcing me as the newest member of the @Barbie Shero family! The Barbie Shero Program recognizes women who break boundaries to inspire the next generation of girls and I am so excited to join this incredible group of women.”
“I’m proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come true ?? #shero“, said Ibtihaj on her Instagram post.
The Barbie Shero Program was created to honour ‘female heroes who inspire girls by breaking boundaries and opening wider possibilities for women everywhere’.
Other Shero honourees include Ava DuVernay, Emmy Rossum, Eva Chen, Kristin Chenoweth, Sydney “Mayhem” Keiser, Trisha Yearwood, Ashley Graham, Gabby Douglas, and Misty Copeland.
Now, girls and boys can be anything they want!
