You’re one step closer to finding out…
As we get closer to saying goodbye to 2016, we’re reviewing the events that happened this year. The music industry saw a big loss with the passing of music legends like David Bowie and Prince, but on a lighter note we also got loads of new albums and tracks that have been repeatedly playing on our playlists. Earlier this month, Spotify unleashed their annual top list to recap on the artists, albums and tracks that made it big in 2016.
So who’s Malaysia’s favourite artist?
Well, the people have spoken and it looks like The Chainsmokers proved to be the listeners’ choice!
With only two song releases, Don’t Let Me Down and the on repeat, Closer, the EDM duo kicked their music with a bang and nabbed themselves our top artiste and top male artist of 2016, with both tracks in the top five. The duo is followed by Justin Bieber and Coldplay. In the ladies department, with her album release, Dangerous Women and chart topping hits Dangerous Woman, Into You and the latest track Side to Side from the album, Ariana Grande became our top female artist.
On a global scale, congratulations to Drake for topping the charts for the most streamed artist (second time in a row) and album in 2016! He was streamed over 4.7 billion this year, and in fact is Spotify’s most streamed artist of all time with over 8.7 billion streams (yes, Malaysia we contributed to that too!). His album Views ranked No.1 as the most streamed album featuring his hit song One Dance (Spotify’s most popular track).
