An Open Letter To Everyone Who Has Ever Thought They Weren’t Beautiful Enough

One of the many questions I get from people is how I gained my self-confidence. Well, the answer is simple: you have to trust yourself. It’s hard for us to boost our self-esteem if we don’t believe in ourselves. I auditioned for Miss Universe Malaysia 2018 because I’ve always dreamt of being a supermodel no matter what others had to say about me and I learnt that no amount of outside support is as important as motivating and supporting myself.

After getting past the audition rounds for Miss Universe Malaysia 2018, the organisation shared my pictures online and in return, media portals all over the world started to gain interest in my story. I was shocked and speechless that my picture could garner more than 10K likes. Though I only made it past the top 50, I realised that it was still a huge achievement. It was a wonderful opportunity to be able to share my experience, inspire others and change the world’s perspective about the true meaning of beauty. My life changed because I was brave enough to try something new and I am thankful for the opportunity to educate others on my condition and on anti-bullying.

Last February, I was offered the chance to be part of Zalora’s Own Now branding campaign which celebrates authenticity, diversity, empowerment, individuality, self-expression and personal style. I flew in to Singapore for the shoot and I couldn’t have been more excited to be given that opportunity. What’s more, that was my first time leaving the country!

I was also invited by Flawless, an aesthetic centre in the Philippines, to be one of its new ‘Dare to Bare’ 2018 summer campaign brand ambassadors. Through that, I got to meet other inspiring women, who are brave and have strong personalities who have gone the extra mile to redefine beauty standards in their own society.

The quote that really helped me throughout my journey and I hope it will help others too was this: ‘Confidence is not about whether “they will like me” but more of “I’ll be ok if they don’t”. Beauty is about being comfortable in your own skin. It is about knowing and accepting who you are. It isn’t enough to be just beautiful on the outside but it’s also important for us girls to have our own inner beauty that represents us in the real world. Have a good heart, be lovable and kind, and don’t be afraid of being smarter than others as you too, can be a role model to others.”
