FEMALE Tries: Crab Chowdown At Hilton Kuala Lumpur

Whether you’re a pescatarian or simply a crab lover, the Crab Chowdown menu at Hilton Kuala Lumpur’s all-day dining restaurant, Vasco’s is not to be missed. For the whole month of April, the restaurant will be bringing guests on a crustacean journey with an array of authentic crab dishes prepared in more than 10 different ways!

Available for dinner, guests can expect to be served a buffet of mixed robust flavours ranging from Indian, Malay, Chinese, Japanese and Thai cooking styles, with a live cooking station to prepare freshly cooked tom yam crabs. Ahead of the launch of the menu, we had the chance to taste all these amazing dishes and were undeniably satisfied with the meal. Four different types of crabs are used in the buffet dishes — blue swimmer crabs, flower crabs, baby crabs and soft shell crabs — and they’re all locally sourced to support businesses from the coasts of Sarawak and Straits of Johor.

For appetizers, diners can kick off their crab journey with cold starters such as the Flower Crabs on Ice, Crab Salmon Rolls and Malay-style Kerabu Ketam with Avocado before heating things up with a warm bowl of Tom Yam Soup with a choice of blue swimmer crab or flower crab. Made with crab meat, cucumbers, capsicums, kerabu spices and sliced avocado, the Kerabu Ketam may look similar to a tuna salad but it certainly caught our attention for its unique and refreshing taste.

With a variety of Chinese-style crab dishes such as the Kam Heong Crab, Black Pepper Crab, Hong Kong Style Crab and Stir Fried Crab with Chili Bean Sauce, diners can definitely look forward to indulging in some robust flavours as well. We expected the Black Pepper Crab to be very spicy but it was one of our favourite dishes for the night. The heat from the black pepper was not too overpowering at all and the flavours were well-balanced — not too spicy, not too sweet and not too salty.

Spicy Chili Crab

The Spicy Chilli Crab is a dish not to be missed if you love dipping mantou buns into gravy. While the mild spiciness of the dish certainly whets the appetite, the highlight of it was the savoury sauce that paired heavenly with the soft mantou buns. To cool down from the heat, the braised crabmeat soup is the perfect choice thanks to its hearty, savoury flavours and the generous amount of crabmeat.

Head over to the Malay section where diners are able to find authentic Malay-style crab dishes such as Crab and Pineapple Cooked with Coconut Gravy and Crispy Baby Crab with Vasco’s special sauce on the side. For a range of more aromatic crab dishes, the Indian section boasts some mouthwatering flavours including Crab Chanttinadu, Tandoori Cran and Goan Crab Curry (Crab Xec-Xec).

“The one Malay-style dish that attracted me to return for a second serving was undoubtedly the Crab and Pineapple Cooked with Coconut Gravy. The mild spiciness, tanginess and coconut fragrance from the gravy matched really well with the sweetness of the crabmeat. I love the soft shell crabs that were deep fried to crisp perfection as well!” – Elaine, Digital Writer
