Starting the new year right isn’t as complicated as it seems. You don’t need pressure yourself to go a mile to have one foot on the right track. Sometimes it’s the simple things we do in the beginning of the year that will put you on the right train for a smooth ride through the rest of the year. Based on our personal experiences, a simple change in our mundane life makes a difference on how the rest of our day will go. Hey, it’s the little things that count, right?
Here are 18 simple things you can do to start 2018 right!
1. Wake up early
Of course, after a weekend of partying and going out, you’d want to just stay in bed and sleep the morning away. But you actually feel way better if you start your day early. Start the new year with a nice breakfast of your choice with a cup of freshly brewed coffee or tea or plain water. Just sit down, enjoy your breakfast and just take it slow. Trust us, it’s so Zen!
Be it in the shower or driving in town, pinpoint your best of 2017 memories and reflect on the fun times you had. But it’s also good to look at the hardships as well. Turn them into something positive and learn from it so hopefully, you don’t make the same mistakes again. Let the bad juju stay in the pass in bring forth the best for the new year.
An annual must when starting a new year, de-cluttering is truly a good way for you start the year fresh. Let go of any unused items in your house to give your personal space a breather. Not sure where to start? Begin with your bedroom cos it’s your personal sanctuary allow the space to be filled with things that will make you happy.
4. Edit your makeup/beauty kit
It’s probably a heart-breaking step to take if you’re a beauty junkie but it has to be done. Throw away your expired products and empty containers. Go through your stash and see if there are any that can still be used. Put them aside in a ‘to give’ pile and gift them to your friends.
5. Eat mindfully
You are what you eat so don’t start the year by stuffing yourself with junk food your body doesn’t need. Make a list of unprocessed and healthy food that you like and try and work your diet around it. You’ll feel a lot better and your body will thank you for it.
6. But also indulge once in a while
That being said…it’s totally okay to indulge once in a while. Just don’t get to comfortable with it.
7. Get 8 hours of sleep
Many found that sleeping for a good seven to eight hours a day has benefits for your body. It can decrease health risks such as diabetes, heart diseases, and even death. Besides that, it will improve your body’s immune system as you’re giving your body a break to take its much-needed rest. It will also control excessive eating and hunger pangs.
8. Social Media Detox
Instead of going completely AWOL, just take an hour or two off the grid and use the time to cook, read or catch up with family and friends face to face.
9. Drink more water
H20 is so important in our daily lives. It can help to improve your skin complexion and help with digestions. The next time you eat out, always opt for a glass of plain water and skip all the sugary drinks. Repeat after us: water is my juice!
10. Social Media Edit
If you’re the kind to rant on social media about how badly you were treated by your boss or gossip on that new colleague at the office, sit down and delete all the negativity in your social media life. You don’t need something like that on your feed. You can also un-follow those uninspiring accounts cos you don’t need to see them if you’re not feeling inspired. Remember; keep only the things that make you happy!
11. Make travel plans
Whether you’re planning to go abroad or a trip across the states, plan your travel adventures ahead. Maybe you and your best friends can finally go on that trip you’ve been talking about this year!
12. Make resolution
Resolutions are inevitable; you sort of can’t go through a new year without setting some goals even if sometimes you don’t follow it (that’s a whole other story). Sometimes we put in so much in the list that you lose focus along the way. Just be realistic and put in five goals or less to achieve in the year. You’ll have a better vision and mission to guide you through to achieve them before the year ends.
13. Connect and Reconnect
The new year is a good time to connect with loved ones or reconnect with old friends. A simple ‘Hello’ through text or a call will perhaps continue bridging the gap. If you think it might seem out of the blue, just send out the ‘Happy New Year’ text to those you want to reconnect and start from there.
14. Make a playlist
Creating a playlist can help set the tone for the rest of the year. It’s a fun process as you not only get to sing along to your favourite tunes but also discover new artists and songs to expand your musical list.
15. Get new clothes
Although we did just ask you to de-clutter, there’s no harm in getting new clothes to make you feel better on the inside and out. Set your own budget and come up with a complete head to toe outfit.
Tip! Make sure you’re going to one to wear the items again and again so you’re not adding more unnecessary clothes to your closet.
16. Find new quotes to live by
Keep your ideas and dreams fresh by giving yourself new quotes to live by. You can never have too much cheer quotes to encourage you to pursue your dreams.
17. Get a pet or plant
Adopt a pet or get yourself some green friends. It will make coming home a lot livelier. You’ll also have something to look forward to at the end of the day.
18. Make a to-do list for the week
Take a piece of paper and jot down what you need to do for the rest of the week whether it’s personal or work. Having it on paper will help you see your schedule clearly and it will make planning everything a whole lot easier. Make sure you follow through with them so you won’t have any excess baggage weighing you down come the weekend.
