I’m old enough that I still remember a time when deciding which mooncakes to eat for Mid-Autumn Festival was a simple choice between two flavours: lotus paste and red bean. Additional variety came in the form of how many salted egg yolks you wanted in your mooncakes, but that was about it. (Or maybe my family was just extra conservative!)
In recent years however, mooncake flavours have gotten more and more exciting and creative. Flavours I never imagined ending up in the heart of a mooncake – coffee, blueberry, and durian to name a few – have become as commonplace as good old lotus paste and every year keeps pushing the boundary of what a mooncake can be!
