Malaysia’s first vegan ice cream bar is here!
First of all, what’s vegan ice cream?
Basically, it’s an ice cream that’s completely free from animal-derived products such as meat, eggs, dairy, and honey. And Malaysia’s just gotten its first taste of vegan ice cream from Kind Kones, a newly-opened 100% vegan ice cream bar in 1 Mont Kiara.
“There’s a small but growing vegan community in Malaysia who can’t eat any ice creams,” explains founder Serina S. Bajaj, whose previous forays into inclusive dining include her own vegetarian cooking blog and vegetarian restaurant Raisin’ The Roof. With Kind Kones, she hopes to change that. Her mission is simple, she says. She just wants her ice cream to be enjoyed by everyone– whether they’re vegan by choice or because of any food sensitivities.
In crafting her vegan ice cream, Serina has accomplished an impressive feat. Ice cream making is a science as much as it is an art. Getting the distinctive consistency of an ice cream – frozen yet smooth, creamy, and rich – requires a time-tested perfected balance of dairy fat, sugar, and in the case of commercial ice creams, a lot of emulsifiers, stabilisers and thickeners.
Kind Kones uses none of that. Their ice creams are completely free of refined sugar, dairy products, preservatives, and chemical stabilisers and thickeners. Instead of refined cane sugar, they use coconut nectar, which has a mellow caramelised sweetness reminiscent of gula melaka and is a much healthier alternative for diabetics. Coconut milk or nut paste, rich in healthy fats, takes the place of heavy dairy cream.
You might be able to pick up on a slight difference in taste, but the chefs at Kind Kones have managed to weave these dairy alternatives seamlessly and pleasantly into their flavours. The result? An ice cream that feels remarkably like a traditional creamy ice cream, with the same richness and smoothness.
Besides best-selling flavours like their Salted Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon Toast, and Strawberry, you can also expect a rotating stable of localised and seasonal flavours like Sweet Corn, Matcha, Jackfruit, Black Sesame and more. And of course, cones are also available in vegan and gluten-free options.
While Kind Kones’ ice creams don’t taste like traditional dairy ice creams, they’re rich, delicious, and fulfilling in their own right. Kind Kones certainly delivers on their promise: it’s all the indulgence without the guilt! A single scoop starts at RM9.90, while a double scoop will cost you RM17.50, with an array of healthy toppings to choose from. If you really can’t get enough, be sure to pick up a take-home pint for RM41.50, where they’ll keep in your freezer for up to 72 hours.
Besides ice creams, Kind Kones also stocks a mouthwatering range of guilt-free desserts. Take your pick from 100% raw brownies to gluten-free cakes and superfood-packed health balls.
In Serina’s own beaming words, “every dessert here has a purpose.”
