Living in a perpetual state of summer as we do, it’s crucial to load up on sun protection. Supergoop! brand founder Holly Thaggard shows us the easy way to do it.

Supergoop! is the only brand that’s dedicated solely to sun protection. Tell us more about it.

“We’re building skincare products and a foundation in protecting the skin from sun damage. What differentiates us most is that our formulas feel amazing on the skin, they’re high performing and we avoid controversial ingredients – healthy ingredients are very important to us. We’re delivering it in unique ways such as in body butter, facial makeup setting mist, loose powder, lip gloss and so many more. The reason for that is that we want people to incorporate it in their daily regimen and we know that if you make it hard, they’re less likely to protect their skin. We deliver both mineral and chemical formulas for different types of skin.”

Professional tennis player Maria Sharapova is your co-owner. How did that come about and how has she helped boost your brand presence?

“Maria’s amazing! She’s 29 now and she’s got this business savvy that I hardly see in anyone her age. She and her agent approached me after she’d already been wearing Supergoop! for several years. The everyday formula was something she found in Sephora and was very passionate about it because it’s the only sunscreen she’s been able to compete in and not have it run in her eyes. And that’s very important for a professional athlete. So when she reached out to us in 2014, she really just wanted to thank me. What became of that was her wanting to own part of the company and to really get the word out because we have such a big message. What I love about her is that she’s genuinely passionate about something that I’m passionate about too. She’s definitely helped raise awareness for our brand as Maria’s well-known throughout the world.”

What are some of the misconceptions people have about sun protection?

“The first one is that SPF in their makeup is enough. It’s actually not, because you don’t apply it as generously as you should to get the stated amount of protection. If you apply your tinted moisturiser or your foundation generously, you’d look like you had a big ol’ cake on your face. We’re really taught to use our makeup pretty conservatively to get a natural glow and that’s not how SPF should be applied. The second one is that sunscreen lasts all day so they don’t need to reapply. That’s absolutely not true! The sun breaks down all sunscreens, no matter the formula after three or four hours, so if you find yourself outside around 4 o’ clock, and you haven’t reapplied since morning when you put your makeup on, sun damage will happen.”

What are the areas of the body that people often forget to protect?

“The eyes, lips and hands. People tend to avoid the eye area cos they think sunscreen is going to burn their eyes, but the eyes are where you start to see lines and wrinkles first. It’s also where dermatologists find skin cancer first. For lips, people don’t realise that lipstick magnifies the UV rays and the skin is thinner in that area.”

Is it ever too late to start sun protection if you’ve never used it before?

“The earlier the better, for sure, but it’s never too late. When you skin cells are not protected, they’re replicating damaged cells, so every bit of protection you can give them to replicate healthier cells is better. And what I love about so many of our formulas it that they have the antioxidants that work to correct signs of ageing.”

Name five Supergoop! essentials everyone needs.

“The City Sunscreen Serum, not only does it delivers UV protection but also provides environmental protection. It’s so lightweight and hydrating that you’d want to apply it everywhere generously and that’s the way SPF should be applied. The Defense Refresh Setting Mist delivers SPF50 and does it while mattifying the face, so if you have any shine in the afternoon, it takes care of that. The Anti-Aging Eyecream SPF37 comes with a cooling tip that depuffs the eyes and it gives a nice luminous finish. A little goes a long way. The Shine On Lip Screen is gloss that goes right on top of your lipstick, allowing your lip colour to shine through while still providing high SPF. And the Forever Young Hand Cream works on any discolouration or age spots on your hands while strengthening your nails.”

Supergoop! is currently available online at Sephora.my and will hit Sephora Stores starting June 2017.

Can you guess which artists Malaysians listen to the most on Spotify?

(The results probably won’t surprise you.)

It’s  The Chainsmokers, Ed Sheeran, and The Weeknd.

The Chainsmokers were the most-streamed artist in Malaysia last year.

Spotify Asia revealed these stats during a media session to celebrate their fourth year in Malaysia.  It’s hard to believe we’ve only had Spotify around for four years now. We can barely remember what things were like before Spotify — it’s all a haze of folders, iTunes, Winamp, downloaded mp3s, CDs, iPods… It’s safe to say that the music-streaming service has revolutionised how we listen to music. And Spotify doesn’t just make music more accessible, it’s also really, really good at gathering data on our listening habits.

According to Spotify, Malaysians spend an average of 148 minutes everyday streaming music. In the past year, we streamed a collective 7.8 billion minutes of music!

Most of those minutes were probably spent playing the most-streamed albums of the year, which were The Weeknd’s Starboy, Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, and Bruno Mars’ 24k Magic. As for songs, Malaysians really liked Shape of You by Ed Sheeran (again), Say You Won’t Let Go by James Arthur, and Paris by The Chainsmokers. The most popular genres in Malaysia are (perhaps unsurprisingly) Pop, Hip Hop, and EDM.

If you’re curious about what your fellow Malaysians are listening to, this playlist of Malaysia’s Top 50 most-played songs  is updated daily:

With 30 million tracks at our fingertips, we can create all the customised playlists we want. Spotify does so as well, and shared which playlists Malaysians listen to throughout the day:

5 am to 9 am: Early birds love starting their days with the energetic beats in “Good Morning, Malaysia!”, while others prefer the laid-back low-key tunes from “Morning Stroll”. Which camp do you fit in?

9 am to 12 pm: In the first half of the work day, the most frequently streamed playlist is “Deep Focus”, a selection of ambient, atmospheric rock that makes great background noise when you’re working.

12 pm to 5 pm: Malaysians charge through their post-lunch food comas with some light and easy listening. The aptly-named “Pop Waktu Kerja” and “Top Hits Malaysia” are most frequently streamed during the second half of the work day. Spotify also reports that most streaming happens in the hour between 4 pm and 5 pm!

6 pm to 10 pm: The upbeat progressive house tunes of the “Night Rider” playlist help Malaysians through the dreadful rush hour commute. At night, most pick “Rock Jiwang” or “Party Life” to unwind.

10 pm to 1 am: Time to sleep. Malaysians use playlists like “Deep Sleep” and “Before Tidur” to lull themselves off to dreamland.

Spotify’s curated playlists are perfect listening at any time of the day. But we have to say, no playlist will probably ever top this one they created during the great haze fiasco of 2015:

S

So good.

Your weekend anti-aging skin beauty project.

 What is gua sha?

Gua sha is an ancient Chinese medical therapy that uses a scraping motion to clear congestion, stimulate blood flow and draw out toxin buildup. In Western countries, it’s sometimes called ‘spooning’ or ‘coining’ – common gua sha tools include smooth-edged, flat objects like ceramic soup spoons, coins, animal horns or jade.

Photography: thefashionsupernova.com

What are the benefits of gua sha for skin?

  • Diminishes lines and wrinkles
  • Brightens skin and evens out skin tone
  • Reduces double chin and sagging
  • Lifts facial contours for a firmer appearance
  • Restores skin’s inner radiance
  • Promotes lymphatic circulation and detoxifies skin
  • Improves acne and pimples

How do I do it?

Photography: sugarpodbeauty.co.uk

Before: Apply cream or gel mask on a clean, dry face.

Step 1: Using your guasha board, start from the ‘third eye’ (the space between your brows). Scrape in one fluid motion towards the hairline. Repeat five times.

Step 2: From the side of the nose, sweep the guasha board diagonally upwards towards the ear. Apply light pressure to the temple with the board. Repeat five times and switch sides.

Step 3: From the middle of the chin, sweep the board towards the earlobe, following your jawline. Repeat five times and switch sides.

After: Massage your face with fingertips to let the mask soak in and rinse off.

KEEP IN MIND…

  • All gua sha movements should be done in one single direction, never back and forth.
  • You can get a gua sha board at Daiso for only RM5.30 (It’s labeled as a ‘face plate’)!
  • You’ll experience a dull ache on certain points for the first few times – these are lymphatic points. The more toxins you have accumulated in your system, the more painful it will be. Don’t worry, it will go away after a few times of gua sha!

Life’s too short to just eat cake. Instead of having cake, here are other dessert options you can serve at a party!

Photo: gzhaixier.com

Be it at birthdays, weddings, hen’s night or even baby showers, nothing beats having a good old-fashioned cake as the designated dessert and table centrepiece. Having said that, times have changed and bakers are getting more and more creative with their work. In today’s market, there are just so many other options for us to indulge in without having to opt for a traditional 1/2-tier butter cream frosted cake!

I recently had the honour of planning a bachelorette party for a close friend, and during the process of deciding what I could order to surprise her, I came across an array of cute and creative alternatives that will make any girl go all heart-eye emoji on Instagram. Plus, these would make the perfect substitute for anyone who’s not a fan of cake!

It’s time to tie the knot!

We know that they may not have the best reputation when it comes to being fashionable, but trust us when we say it’s possible to look trendy in a one! Call it pussy-bow or tie-neck shirts, these ribbon details add that bit of feminine flair to your usual button-down blouses.

Perfect for ladies who’d like to jazz up their plain ol’ pantsuit or skirt-suit look, these blouses are more versatile than you think! You can style them in different ways, depending on the look you’re going for.

Here’s how:

Photography: Designers Outfit Collection

Stick to the less-is-more route by sporting the usual basics, but count on the lil’ details – flared sleeves, frayed hem and monogram print to stand out.

]]>
Maybe you can recite all the lines from your favourite fashion flicks, but can you tell drama from reality? We let you in on some truths you might not have known about the fashion industry.

You don’t get free clothes all the time.

via GIPHY

We’re sorry to break it to you, but all the designer duds you see debuting at fashion shows or in glossy magazine spreads? Those don’t quite make it off the runway and straight into the closets of people who work in fashion. Far from ‘The Closet’ in The Devil Wears Prada, where Andy (played by Anne Hathaway) gets to ‘borrow’ Chanel clothes, much of the designer clothes used for shoots are loaned and end up having to be returned. Perhaps from time to time, those who work in the industry may be gifted special designer pieces (more so towards very famous models- think the Hadids, Karlie Kloss, Kendall Jenner- and magazine editors), but most of the time their wardrobes come from their own wallets- more Zara than Chanel, not that that’s a bad thing at all!

The Fashion Week shows aren’t as glamorous as you might imagine.

via GIPHY

The Zoolander films are so ridiculous, we wouldn’t take most of them seriously! One thing we’ve noticed, though, is that in the movies, fashion shows are portrayed as outrageously extravagant. Fashion shows are actually incredibly hectic, and no one gets their personal space: models have to change in an open space whilst being hounded by photographers, the shows’ guests are crammed into tightly packed seats and the paparazzi clamour to get shots of famous faces. In between shows, people rush around so much the whole day that there’s barely any time for a snack, let alone a proper meal! Perhaps we’re fine with watching from behind our computer screens.

Even those who get discovered as models don’t always have it easy.

via GIPHY

Funny Face (1957), starring the beautiful Audrey Hepburn, is about a young woman who gets discovered by a famous fashion photographer and whisked away to Paris to start her career as a top model- basically, every aspiring model’s dream! Unfortunately, to burst your bubble, there’s a low chance of that happening. In actual fact, becoming a model is hard work, and expensive too. There’s a lot of running around agencies trying to find one that will represent you. To do that, you will need a good portfolio, which is often financed by the model his or herself. Lots of models move to big cities and share less-than-desirable housing to cut costs. There’s also a battle between models and

People in the fashion and magazine industries aren’t always horrible people.

via GIPHY

Admittedly, we live for the on-screen drama that plays out in our fashion flicks, including the catty showdown between 13-year-old turned 30-year-old magazine editor Jenna and a frizzy-haired critique in 13 Going on 30, and basically every mean yet hilarious line Emily comes up with in The Devil Wears Prada. But in real life, many people in the industry just aren’t that horrible. Especially in this day and age, no one will body-shame you for being above a size four (US) or blatantly sneer over what you’re wearing. Now, body positivity and acceptance are IN; Vogue even put size 16 (US) model Ashley Graham on their cover!

Realistically, regular salaries won’t support serious spending addictions.

via GIPHY

Yup, Sex and the City, we’re looking at you! We think most of you in the working world should know this by now, but if Carrie Bradshaw is your #goals in life, we just want to let you know not to feel bad if your wardrobe isn’t a walk-in wardrobe stuffed with tulle skirts and Dior. Many writers, journalists, stylists and more realistically wouldn’t be able to attain all of this stuff; in fact, most of us working women in our twenties to thirties wouldn’t be able to either! A more realistic scenario: in Confessions of a Shopaholic, lead character Becky faces the realistic outcome of her shopping addiction: she ends up in debt and has to sell all her clothes in order to pay them off. Let that be a cautionary tale for you guys.

You shouldn’t wear heels every day.

via GIPHY

High heels may class up your look, but sometimes fashion isn’t worth the pain. Remember that scene of frenzy when Miranda Priestly (brilliantly portrayed by Meryl Streep, might we add) returns to the office and everyone frantically swaps flats for heels? In actual fact, heels pull muscles, cause backaches and hinder productivity; in real life it’s a norm for most people in the industry, from fashion editors, to models, to designers, to be running around carrying out their errands in sneakers all the time. But if you really must have a bit of height,  block- or kitten-heel styles are cute and won’t totally destroy your posture!

You can eat more than salads or a single cube of cheese when you’re hungry.

via GIPHY

Fit is the new skinny, and fad diets are on their way out. Many people in the fashion industry, just like everyone else, would rather eat healthy and work out than starve themselves (and “eat a cube of cheese” when they “feel like they’re about to faint”, like The Devil Wears Prada‘s Emily). With body positivity and diversity in all shapes and sizes becoming popular in the media and in real life, sticking to a size zero isn’t a priority anymore. Also, many fashion brands are prone to sending thank-you cupcakes and other sweet snacks to offices… and no one would want them to go to waste, right?

If you want to be in the industry, you’ll have to be prepared to work hard.

via GIPHY

Many people only notice the glamorous side of fashion, and glamorous we can’t deny. Nonetheless, the fashion industry comes with its challenges, just like any other job. It’s about having a creative eye and being able to match the perfect outfits to accessories (getting the colours just right, of course), sourcing for several materials and outfits (be prepared to lug heavy bags around!) given a short deadline, being savvy, knowledgeable and skilled in covering informative and opinionated reviews on the latest trends, and at the highest level, being able to piece together an entire magazine or website’s worth of fashion material at a rapid pace, as trends are always changing!

We were blessed earlier this month when ZARA announced they’re doing an online shop and now the giant beauty retail, Sephora Malaysia revealed its first ever mobile shopping app, called the ‘Sephora – Beauty Shopping’. Hoorah!

Beauty junkies can now buy the latest beauty products with just a click away. You can download the app via Apple Store and Google Store for free. Leading Malaysia’s beauty industry with this first of its kind customer-centric app, consumers can enjoy the reality of a ‘fast-beauty’ shopping experience.

Besides that, shoppers can watch beauty tutorials by beauty experts all over the world and share their wishlist, to family and friends (in case they’re having trouble getting your birthday presents *wink). If you have a Beauty Pass card, you no longer need to bring in the card to collect points and get rewards as you can easily have your Beauty Pass’ barcode through the app. Genius!

“Our shoppers want the best in beauty, they want it now. Thanks to the ‘Sephora – Beauty Shopping’ app, it’s now at their beautifully manicured fingertips. They can discover the best in beauty – makeup, skincare, fragrance and more – anytime, anywhere, whilst receiving all the benefits of a store experience.” said Cindy Lee, Country Manager, Sephora Malaysia.

Apart from having the app in hand, Cindy also mentioned having app-exclusive rewards where shoppers can use flash previews, get early access to product launches and surprise promotions. Honestly, we’re all smiles and ready to start shopping!

Three Perfume Trends You’ll Want To Wear This Year http://femalemag.com.my/beauty/2017-perfume-trends/ Fri, 24 Mar 2017 08:13:55 +0000 http://femalemag.com.my/?p=28672 Fresh green scents, alluring unisex fragrances, and unique niche perfumes. Fresh green scents, alluring unisex fragrances, and unique niche perfumes.

How’s your year going? We’re sure your outfits are on point and your makeup game as strong as ever, but how about your choice of scent? If you’re on top of all the fashion and beauty trends, it’s time to think about fragrances! Olfactory memory, or our ability to associate memories and feelings with scent, is incredibly powerful. So if you want to leave a lasting impression, let your scent do the talking.

In France, a girl’s first perfume purchase is an almost sacrosanct coming-of-age ceremony – they are taken to a perfume house by their mothers, where they are then encouraged to sample different scents before choosing one that they feel represents their personality and style. The symbolism is beautiful and encourages young girls to think deeply about who they are. (My first self-chosen perfume was DKNY’s Be Delicious, when I was 15. I wore it for most of my formative years before branching out – though my preference still leans towards the same crisp, slightly sweet scents.)

Finding a signature scent is something everyone should get to do once in their life. Because there’s nothing quite like it!

Intrigued? Want to find your personal scent signature too? Take a look at 2017’s perfume trends for starters.

1. Think green

Like Pantone’s Colour of the Year, 2017’s perfumes are all about green. From green bottles to refreshing green aromatics like tea, mint, and other botanicals, you’ll want your perfume to capture the liveliness of the year! Green scents range from wet and juicy like a newly-pruned leaf, to crisp citrus and light herby blends.

2. Down with gender stereotypes

Even fragrances are set to shun gender stereotypes this year with the rise of unisex perfumes. Your own skin chemistry plays more of a role in how a scent smells like on you than your gender does (which is why I think my boyfriend smells amazing in my sugar-sweet fragrances), so don’t be afraid to ignore strict gender distinctions. Gender identity is a spectrum, after all. These perfumes blur the line between stereotypically masculine and feminine, andt will smell amazing on anyone!

3. Go niche

This is the trend for all history or vintage junkies out there. In a nod back to the history of perfumeries, unorthodox ingredients, small-scale niche and indie perfume houses, and traditional production methods are making a comeback this year for truly unique smells. Look out for unconventional formulations and uncommon ingredients like silver frankincense and rare Damask rose. The more obscure, the better! The downside? They may not be so easy to find.

Move over, matte liquid lippies cos it’s gloss’s turn to shine (pun intended)! We foresee this #throwback trend returning to the beauty shelves and taking over the space in your vanity case especially after Chanel rolled out its new Rouge Coco Gloss range that’s carefully crafted to combine an incredibly illuminating colour, texture, and formula for dewy lips you’ve always dreamed of (minus the annoying stickiness). Moreover, it sure helps that Karl’s current muse, Lily-Rose Depp (who also fronted the Chanel N°5 L’EAU campaign and closed the recent Chanel couture SS17 show in Paris Fashion Week) is the face of the #RougeCocoGloss campaign.

What to expect when you glide this gloss on: a refreshingly-light texture and gel-like finish with a light-reflecting shine thanks to its highly-hydrating formula consisting translucent glass beads along with its Hydraboost complex, which comprise jojoba, sunflower, mimosa and coconut oil to deliver longer-lasting comfort and moisture with each buttery-smooth application.

Palette-wise, you’ll be spoilt for choice with 24 lustrous shades ranging from sweet pinks and bold reds to deep plums and shimmery nudes. For extra oomph, this lip gloss line also comes with three special top coats that can be layered on any existing colour to transform its texture and hue into something completely new!

Clockwise from top: 776 Impulsion, 778 Caviar, 774 Excitation

774 Excitation: Highlight your pout with a brilliant shine with this sparkling transparent shade

776 Impulsion: This sheer orange-yellow hue energises your lips with enhanced radiance

778 Caviar: Add depth and mystery to your puckers with this clear yet intensifying tone.
