The first Monday of May 2019 couldn’t be any busier!
Hours after we were blessed with news of the birth of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s first child, eyes were focused on another event to go wild for: the Met Gala! As the night follows the theme ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’, we were treated to a red carpet full of surprises with celebrities stepping out in designs we certainly didn’t expect.
But before we move on to the fashion looks, there’s just one problem: Nobody really understood what the theme meant. In fact, Celine Dion was reported to have left an E! reporter speechless after admitting she had no idea as well.
“I was a little bit confused when I heard ‘Camp’. I thought it meant ‘camping’. We’re going camping! We’re going to be at the Met and everyone is going to stay and sleep all night together. But no,” she said.
So what exactly does ‘Camp’ mean?
It’s based on Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Noted on ‘Camp'” that signifies “the essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration”.
In an interview with The New York Times, Andrew Bolton, curator of The Costume Institute (the person who basically runs the Met Gala alongside Anna Wintour) explains: “We are going through an extreme camp moment, and it felt very relevant to the cultural conversation to look at what is often dismissed as empty frivolity but can be actually a very sophisticated and powerful political tool, especially for marginalized cultures. Whether it’s pop camp, queer camp, high camp or political camp – Trump is a very camp figure – I think it’s very timely.”
In summary, it’s all about fabulousness, irony and humour in the sense of extreme fashion. Now that we’ve got a hang on the theme, it’s time to take a closer look at some of the most extravagant outfits we spotted on the red carpet.
