Oh and Happy 49th Birthday Carla!
Okay before we continue, it’s only fitting to have her tune play in the background whilst you go through her couture and casual styles. After all, it is her Birthday.
Born in Turin, Italy, Carla Bruni Sarkozy rose to fame when she was scouted and hired as a model at the age of 19 in Paris. The Italian-French beauty has since went out to grace the catwalks of notable fashion powerhouses like Christian Dior, Yves Saint-Laurent, Christian Lacroix, Chanel, John Paul Gaultier, John Galliano and Versace, amongst many other designers. In 1996 she quit modelling to pursue her music career. For her last YSL show, she asked for a couture dress as payment – a black high neck dress that’s very demure in the front but with an element of surprise behind with an open back – simply gorgeous!
2002 was the year she launched her music career with her French debut album, Quelqu’un m’a dit, followed by a poetry compilation of 19th to 20th century authors accompanied by music in No Promises in 2007. This was the year she met her husband, former French President, Nicolas Sarkozy.
After her marriage, sartorially she changed for a more sophisticated and demure style during her husband’s tenure. “What I would wear in a public situation changed because when you actually have the honour of representing a country, you try to achieve a higher level of elegance to make them happy and proud.” said Carla in a 2013 interview with T Magazine. Many saw similarities of her dressing to that of Jackie Kennedy but we think both shine individually on their own.
Often sporting pantsuits and Dior dresses, Carla’s known to be alluring in whatever she wears; although her ultimate go-to-outfit would include a T-shirt, pants and shoes combo which is pretty casual. So in honour of her 49th birthday, it’s time we take a closer look at her style from her modelling years to that of a first lady.
