The Swedish retail giant opens its second store along the historical street in Melaka.
Joining the row of heritage houses, antique shops, hawker stalls and arty wall murals along Jonker Street is the H&M store, which cannot be missed if you’re passing by Melaka’s iconic Stadhuys red square. Plus, the handsome, all-white standalone building boasts three storeys (read: options, options, options!), marking H&M’s second store in the city after its 2014 debut in Hatten Square.
And to commemorate the special occasion, a small group of media was invited to witness the excitement and countdown before the grand opening at noon on 18th August. Here’s what went down:
Wednesday, 17th August
2pm: After a sumptuous Asam Pedas lunch, we check in to Majestic Hotel only to be greeted by a personal welcome note from H&M’s Country Manager, Fredrik Famm, along with a gift card, which can only mean one thing: shopping!
3pm: Three customised red trishaws stamped with #HMMelaka transport us to the Jonker building store for an exclusive preview and pre-opening retail therapy session, followed by a durian cendol break and a mini tour around the historical city.
7pm: Dinner is at Halia Inc., a hipster restaurant and coffee bar overlooking the serene Melaka river. Two thumbs up for its industrial interior and generous open space concept that came complete with #throwback décor for a nostalgic feel.
Thursday, 18th August
10am: It’s T-minus two hours till the opening, and more than 500 people have already made a bee-line outside and all around the corner building (bless those souls because the sun was scorching!). Meanwhile, we squeeze in a quick chat with Fredik inside the air-conditioned store amidst the Divided concept threads.
11am: We take a stroll around Jonker Street, popping in and out of a few antique shops while filming the entire journey on our Snapchat and Instagram stories. Didn’t miss an #ootd photo opp either with the pretty murals!
11.45am: Fifteen minutes before the doors officially open, the energetic H&M team builds up the excitement by breaking into a group dance. Three lucky fans walk away with shopping vouchers worth RM100, RM200 and RM500 respectively while the first 200 customers in line also get a RM50 voucher each.
12pm: The crowd starts counting down (by the seconds) until the ribbon is officially cut, and then unanimously cheer as they make their way into the brand new store, satiating their shopping needs pre-food hunting for sure!
Address: No. 6, 8, 10 and 12, Lorong Hang Jebat, 75200, Melaka
Opening hours: 10am – 10pm daily
