This is Chanel’s bag of the year: the Gabrielle.
Named and designed after founder Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, the unisex Gabrielle bag embodies her multi-faceted character with its simple yet bold silhouette.
Through this bag and its four muses, designer Karl Lagerfeld turns the spotlight on Gabrielle Chanel, revealing his own notion of the extraordinary woman who embodied a modernity and freedom unprecedented in her time. It’s a fitting homage, imbued with both Coco’s signature sense of practical aesthetics and her inspiration in blurring the masculine-feminine spectrum.
This is Chanel’s first new handbag design since the release of their Boy Bag in 2012. With its signature chained straps, the Gabrielle can be worn in multiple ways: as a cross-body messenger bag or an over-the-shoulder hobo bag, thus allowing everyone to appropriate it for themselves – much as Coco herself might have done. The rest of the line also includes a shopping tote, a backpack, and a drawstring purse in a variety of sizes, finishes, and colours.
A lot of thought and detail has gone into the design of these bags – right down to the ambassadors Lagerfeld has chosen to represent it: Kirsten Stewart, Cara Delevingne, French musician Caroline de Maigret, and Pharell Williams, who is coincidentally the first man to star in a handbag campaign. Check out the full spread featuring all four muses exclusively in our April ‘17 issue.
“They’re all powerful personalities, and all completely different,” explains Lagerfeld. “Each one of them sports the Gabrielle bag in their own way, giving it a different allure.”
In a time where more young adults than ever are identifying as gender-fluid, this unisex, stereotype-shattering bag is a welcome addition to the world of fashion. A Gabrielle fragrance will launch later in the year. If it’s anything like Calvin Klein’s unisex fragrance, we can’t wait.
The Gabrielle bag is available in Chanel boutiques now, with prices ranging from RM13,700 to Rm18,450. Shop the full range here.
