2. Women power on stage
The ceremony kicked off at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles with a bang when singer-songwriter Alicia Keys brought out four influential women on stage: Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jennifer Lopez.
Each of them shared a personal story on how music changed their life, with Lady Gaga kicking it off by saying that music “took my ears, took my hands, my voice and my soul and led me to all of you” and J-Lo chiming in by sharing that music “kept me moving from the Bronx to the big screen and the even bigger screens”.
Yet, it was the former US First Lady who brought down the house after her words were drowned by loud cheers and applause.
“Music has always helped me tell my story, and I know that’s true for everybody here. Whether we like country or rap or rock, music helps us share ourselves, our dignity and sorrows, our hopes and joys. Music shows us that all of it matters, every story within every voice, every note within every song,” said Michelle.
