The first awards show of 2018 is here! The 75th Golden Globes aired live this morning and besides highlighting the best of the film and TV industry in the past year, the awards show was just as notable for its powerful statements about race, gender, equal representation, and female empowerment.
These were our favourite and most inspirational moments from the awards.
1. When (Nearly) Everyone Wore Black
Nearly every attendee of the awards banded together in a powerful sartorial statement in solidarity with the Time’s Up and #MeToo movement to end sexual violence and to campaign for gender equality in the workforce.
Today, it’s not just about movies and pretty dresses at #GoldenGlobes2018. Women in the entertainment industry have band together to show their support for #TimesUp – a movement against sexual harassment, assault, or abuse in the workplace – by wearing one unifying colour, Black. Actress Kerry Washington summed up the #WhyWeWearBlack campaign beautifully in an Instagram post: “Wondering #WhyWeWearBlack ?!?!?! Because we stand with YOU! We stand in solidarity. Together we can end harassment, discrimination & abuse. And create safety, inclusion, equity & parity! FOR ALL PEOPLE. ACROSS ALL INDUSTRIES.”
“This is a moment of solidarity, not a fashion moment,” Eva Longoria told Vogue. “For years, we’ve sold these awards shows as women, with our gowns and colors and our beautiful faces and our glamour. This time, the industry can’t expect us to go up and twirl around. That’s not what this moment is about.”
