One of the must-see things to do when you go to China is to catch, if you can, one of the Impression China shows. These spectacular performances, directed by the creative masterminds behind the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony) are mind-bending celebrations of light, sound and acrobatic feats, usually with the naturally awe-inspiring mountains of China serving as a fitting backdrop.
But if you can’t make it to China, you can get a taste of these shows right here in Malacca. They’ve been adapted for Malaysia (like being held indoors because of the climate!) and feature a uniquely Malaysian story: the history of Malacca.
Directed by Impression’s Wang Chaoge, Encore Melaka is a production of featuring her retelling of the historic state’s beginnings and growth through a timeline of six centuries.
The biggest draw of the 70-minute show is the 360 degree rotating audience auditorium, Southeast Asia’s first. The platform you sit on physically rotates to pan across the stage, and let me tell you– the effect is pretty trippy. Beyond that, the multi-layered and -leveled stage also creates a unique effect that seems to reflect the layered history of the state. Using state of the art technology, combined with comtemporary choreography, and artful delivery, you’ve never seen history presented in the way Encore Melaka does!
There are shows at 5.30 pm ad 8.30 pm on Mondays to Saturdays, and at 2.30 pm and 5.30 pm on Sundays. Tickets are available for purchase on encore-melaka.com starting at RM128 per aduly.
