10 MTV VMA Moments That’ll Make You Feel Old

Isn’t it mind-blowing how times have changed?

The MTV Video Music Awards have always been known for its controversial moments. One would think that after 33 years, this star-studded televised event would lose its dramatic spark, but nonetheless, we’re still constantly being proven wrong with each single passing year.

This year’s VMAs is going to be held at the Madison Square Garden in Manhattan and while we patiently wait to see who’s bringing back the moonman for ‘Video of the Year’, let’s take a stroll down memory lane to revisit the good, the bad and the ugly of MTV’s most-talked about music award show.

Michael Jackson received a standing ovation for his 15-minute performance. It was a medley of his greatest hits (Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, The way you make me feel, Scream, Beat It, Black or white) that was accompanied by Guns N’ Roses’s guitarist, Slash.

Britney Spears made her debut performance on the VMA stage that year performing Baby One More Time. And if that wasn’t enough, NSYNC came in right after to perform their hit Tearin Up My Heart. Did we just hear a collective sigh from all the 90’s kids out there?

Avril Lavigne took home the ‘Best New Artist’ award for her song Complicated, which turned out to be her first of many other awards to come.

Oh, that infamous kiss! Who could ever forget Madonna giving the then American sweetheart Britney Spears a quick tongue action after their opening performance? Fast forward 8 years later and we’ve got Me Agaisnt the Music to listen to.

Russell Brand, who was the host of that year’s award show, caused an uproar when he made fun of the Jonas Brothers for wearing purity rings. Although he apologized for it the following year, it’d be funny if he knew then that a few years down the road, Nick would ditch the ring and Joe would be in a different band singing a song about having sex by the beach.

We’re going to bring you way back ’till when a young Taylor Swift was still making country music. As she got on stage to accept her ‘Best Female Video’ award for You Belong With Me that night, Kanye West suddenly appeared next to her, took her microphone away and announced to the entire world “Yo Tay, I’m really happy for you, and Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!”.

Boy, did that become the most-talked about VMA controversy of all time (pun intended).

Way back when all our guy friends were against the Biebs, Canadian teen sensation Justin Bieber took home the ‘Artist of the Year’ moonman for his song Baby; making him the youngest person ever to win that award. A show of hands, who still sings that song during karaoke sessions with their friends? We know we do and we’re not ashamed to say it.

Beyoncé announced her pregnancy by rubbing her baby bump right after performing her song Love on Top. On a side note, Blue Ivy Carter is now 4 years-old.

Yes, it’s been 3 years since ‘Twerking’ was a thing. Miley Cyrus made the world’s jaw drop during her racy Blurred Lines performance alongside Robin Thicke. We won’t go into detail, but those of you who’ve watched the show back then would know what we’re talking about. Now we just hope that we’ll be able to shake that image off our minds when we’re watching her judge The Voice these next few months.

Taylor Swift made all girls green with envy when she debuted her ‘squad’ in her Bad Blood music video. The song (rumoured to be about her feud with Katy Perry) won her the ‘Video of the Year’ moonman last year. Not only that, she also appeared to have forgiven Kanye West for his 2009 debacle when she presented him with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award (MTV’s version of a lifetime achievement award). Though we think she probably wouldn’t have done that if she knew Kanye had a secret recording of her which his wife would publicly reveal to the world via Snapchat a year later.
