#ThrowbackThursday: San Diego Comic Con 2017

Ever wanted to know what the cast of Supergirl and Supernatural are like in real life? Read on to find out!

If you’ve been following our Instagram updates, you’d know that I visited San Diego back in July to attend the annual Comic Convention. In those five days, I’ve seen and experienced things I never would’ve imagined – I saw Channing Tatum in real life and cheered along with the crowd when Halle Berry downed a full glass of bourbon. I witnessed the love Stephen Amell had for his fans and ate American donuts the size of my hand.

There’s so much more I wished I could reveal here, but you’d just have to grab our October’s Movies & Music issue to read the full scoop. In the meantime, join me as I bring you on a virtual tour of #SDCC2017!

You can probably tell from the video that I had the opportunity to sit in on a couple of panels during my five days at Comic Con and hands down, the Big Bang Theory panel was one I would never forget.

It was an emotional morning for fans and cast alike as the sitcom celebrated their tenth anniversary in the Hall that day. I’ve been watching the show since season one, so the opportunity to see the cast discuss their behind-the-scenes secrets and pranks-gone-wrong (Kaley Cucuo actually hit her head participating in one!) was a dream come true. Though half of the main cast wasn’t present, I still enjoyed hearing them share their thoughts about the dramatic season finale and talk about their favourite guest stars (executive producer Bill Pardy picked Adam West and Kaley choose Stan Lee). We also had a sing-along of an unheard version of Sheldon’s favourite childhood song Soft Kitty which was pretty amazing.

If you’re a fan of the Big Bang Theory, be rest assured that you won’t have to wait too much longer to find out whether Amy and Sheldon are finally getting engaged, seeing that season 11 premieres in Malaysia the same day as the U.S on the 26th of September at 8:10pm on Warner TV (HyppTV Ch 613 & Astro Ch 719)!

Panels aside, another favourite memory of mine was the Warner Bros. Television Media Mixer. Held at the Float Rooftop Bar of Hard Rock Hotel San Diego, this was an invite-only party which I got in thanks to the team at WB. I was already running late due to bad traffic, so by the time I arrived, everybody was already huddled by the stage watching a performance. I managed to wiggle my way through to the front of the stage and my jaw dropped when I saw who the performers were.

If you watch Riverdale, you’d recognise those girls as the actresses who play Cheryl Blossom, Veronica Lodge and Josie & The Pussycats. Just as I was collecting my jaw off the floor, I turn my head and there she was standing a few feet away from me was Melissa Benoist, who was dancing along to the music with her fellow Supergirl cast members. It took every ounce of courage in me to walk over and say hi, low-key afraid of how she’d react and wondering if I should shamelessly ask for a picture.

The night continued on with more music and photo booth fun. I attempted to grab some food by the DIY Taco bar but was too distracted by all the celebrities that were present in the same room. It was definitely a night to remember and even after I got back to my Airbnb, all I could do was look back at all the pictures captured on my camera and think: “How the hell am I going to put this experience into words?“.

I caught Misha Collins and Jared Padalecki from Supernatural just as I was about to leave the party. I can now vouch that Jared is really really tall and that he literally had to squat for this picture.

Fun fact: Melissa Benoist, who plays Supergirl, gave me the blue and yellow pom poms she was holding (from the earlier Riverdale opening performance), but because they were too bulky, I did not bring it home. A decision I regret ’till this day.

It was weird listening to K J Apa’s New Zealand accent after being used to watching him play the All-American Archie Andrews in Riverdale. I initially suggested getting someone to help take our picture, but he was quick to offer his services of holding my camera for a selfie.

Madelaine Petsch might play mean girl Cheryl Blossom on Riverdale but she was the sweetest in person. She was there with her boyfriend Travis Mills (who helped snap this gorgeous shot). Do we look like we’ve been BFFs for years?

Lili Reinhart and Camila Mendes (who plays Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge respectively on Riverdale) were hot commodities that night seeing that the new CW series is now WB’s hit TV show. You can just imagine how hard it was to catch them both free at the same time.

Now would you look at who’s all grown up! Cole Sprouse, whom many might remember from The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, told me he was surprised that he had fans from all over the world. Cole, come to Malaysia and find out for yourself!

The most-down-to-earth award of the night goes to Danielle Panabaker (who plays Caitlin Snow on The Flash). We stood talking for more than 10 minutes and bonded over the type of kitty headbands we choose.
