“You’re good enough to follow your own dream.” – Smita
If you always thought you had to be a professional before starting a business, think again. All Smita had in hand when she started up Stylitude (thestylitude.com), an online portal that sells quirky yet stylish clutches, was a little knowledge in accounting and furnishing. But what gave her the courage to start her own business and make it is her motto in life: you’re good enough to follow your own dream. Halfway through an accounting course, Smita decided to give it up as she didn’t have the passion for it.
She decided to join her cousin sister in a furnishing business, selling carpets and wallpaper. Seeing that her family comes from this background too, Smita wasn’t too worried, instead she took it as a learning curve. Early this year, she left it in the hands of her cousin.
“Fashion is my passion and I started blogging because I like to share fashion tips and ideas. My sister spotted someone painting on clutch bags in the market and told me about it; I came up with the idea to start up The Stylitude. My sister who lives in Mumbai, India, agreed to help me. I told her what I wanted in terms of design and she looked at the availability of materials.
The challenge is conveying the message to the artist as I can’t draw. What I usually do is whatever I visualise, I try my best to form a collage or stick different fabrics together to form a clutch to get the message across. I would love to work with local artists in the future,” explains Smita. In time to come, she sees herself having a real boutique with designers and even establishing her own product range.
“My main aim with The Stylitude is to make women feel good about themselves every time they purchase the colourful clutches this website offers,” says Smita. For more information about The Stylitude, log on to their website.
