#MYSUPERFEMALE: Alia Bastamam – Fashion Designer

“To me, to be a designer, you need to have the knowledge. This can be learnt through experience, so always be prepared to learn, be a team player and have a sense of business, and you’ll definitely make it!” –  Alia

Having loved fashion from young, Alia has always been interested in designing. She took up an architectural course after completing high school but switched to fashion as she felt it would be more fulfilling as a career.

Right after graduation, she worked at a ready-to-wear resort label in KL. After which, she went on to be junior designer at Jovian Mandagie, where she began to work on bridal and custom-made outfits.

“Prior to setting up my own business, I did a couple of styling jobs but it wasn’t something I really wanted to do. I wanted to be a designer. When we first started the brand, we had to cope with minimal staff, meeting new clients, managing the atelier, fulfilling demands… the list was never ending! In the end, it was all worth it as these tasks become easier once you’re mentally prepared for it. I’m lucky to have a strong team who are also my best friends.”

Her proudest moment was the launch of her showrooms and ateliers, and the multiple awards she has received.

“It has been a great five years for us and I’m so grateful for it. “To me, to be a designer, you need to have the knowledge. This can be learnt through experience, so always be prepared to learn, be a team player and have a sense of business, and you’ll definitely make it!”
