#changedestiny: Turning over a new leaf

Your past doesn’t determine your future. Graphic designer turned personal trainer and founder of Earth’s Benefit, Andrea Ong, proves it’s never too late to find your true calling.

FEMALE: When did you decide to make the switch?

Andrea: “It all happened two years ago. I was stuck in a sleep-all-day-party-all-night lifestyle, something I’m not exactly proud of. One day, while chomping down a bag of chips, I asked myself, ‘If you were 29 today (I was 23 at that time), would you be proud of yourself?’ My answer was no.”

FEMALE: Did you ever think you would be where you are today?

Andrea: “Not in a million years. But I knew I was brought into this world for a good purpose. I just couldn’t figure it out (back) then.”

FEMALE: Any apprehensions before starting your new journey?

Andrea: “I feared rejection and leaving my comfort zone. I was also afraid of what the future holds and the assumptions I had only made it that much harder. But I knew that in order to be different, I had to do things differently. As a wise man once told me, ‘you just have to be a little bit more hardworking than the others and you are one step ahead’.”

FEMALE: Were there obstacles?

Andrea: “It’s pretty ironic but you are your own devil. Our minds are capable of creating boundaries but I believe all you have to do is just push past that and embrace each step forward… and you’ll be one step further than where you were yesterday.”

FEMALE: Did you make mistakes that made you question the route you took?

Andrea: “Of course. I’ve had a few hiccups along the way. But I’ve also come to realise that life is a journey that’s bound to have ups and downs. We’re all battling our own demons. So it’s really up to us to pick the path that feels right and to make it an amazing one.”

FEMALE: How did keep yourself grounded during this change?

Andrea: “A strong support system from my loved ones. Even on days when I doubted myself, they would constantly reassure me, and most importantly, they believed my efforts would result in a brighter future.”

FEMALE: Are you happy with your accomplishments thus far?

Andrea: “I’d say I’m the happiest I’ve ever been despite my past. But the hunger to be the best version of myself is what’s going to make me proud. I want to be able to say that I’ve lived passionately and done everything I’ve ever wanted to do without having any regrets.”
