Foodie at heart and founder of Petiteserie Desserts, Janice Siew, traded her corporate workwear for the white chef’s jacket to fulfill a lifelong passion.

FEMALE: When did you realise you wanted to switch careers?
Janice: “I was working in a bank for seven years, and one day I found out that Le Cordon Bleu was offering a scholarship and decided to apply for it. I think it was luck or by chance that I nailed the scholarship. That’s when I switched my corporate workwear for chef whites and started school in April 2014. The rest, as they say, is history.”
FEMALE: Did you envision yourself in this position from the start?
Janice: “Yes, and I did the conventional route first. I graduated from business school and went on to my banking job. But I’ve always had a passion for baking, so I knew I’d eventually go down this route one day.”
FEMALE: What were you most nervous about?
Janice: “The uncertainty and insecurity. Switching from a stable banking job to life in the kitchen is definitely a 180-degree change. I was anxious about where I was going to work and what I was going to do. But I’d always remind myself to live life to the fullest.”
FEMALE: How did your family react to your decision?
Janice: “When I broke the news that I was going to quit my job and study to become a chef, my very traditional family thought I was crazy. But to me, it’s something I’d always wanted to do. When I got the opportunity to study at Le Cordon Bleu, a prestigious culinary school, I decided to just pursue it.”
FEMALE: Ever had doubts about whether you’re on the right track?
Janice: “I’ve never thought that I was in the wrong path cos it’s been a dream for as long as I can remember. I love food and was always restless the banking industry. The thought of baking and running my own business was too good to pass, which is why I seized the opportunity, and really, there are no regrets.”
FEMALE: What motivates you when things get really hectic?
Janice: “Knowing that I’m making people happy. Nothing beats seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they try your food. From that, I know there’ll never be a bad day at work cos I’m doing something I love.”
FEMALE: Are you happy with how your business is doing?
Janice: “I couldn’t be happier. I have a small café right now and a central kitchen supplying cakes to cafés. We churn out beautiful cakes and homemade pastries, and everything is made from scratch so we’re very proud of that.”
