Here’s Everything We Know About The New Proton SUV

Is this the comeback you’ve been waiting for? To be honest, we’re actually impressed.

There has been a lot of talk and rumours going on about this new car Proton is launching later this year, especially since Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group acquired a 49.99% stake in our national carmaker last May. Just yesterday I had the chance to preview the new Proton X70 at a closed event (trust me, we had to surrender our phones before entering) and let’s just say, there were a few times I caught myself thinking: “Wow, that’s actually really impressive”.

1. Say goodbye to names like SagaWira & Putra and say hello to the X70

Why the name change, you ask? Well, to put it simply, it’s to standardise their future line-up using the alphanumeric naming convention in hopes of tapping into the international market. Those previous names Proton had for their old models might mean something to us given its significant meaning in Malay, but let’s be frank, it’s not universal.

To get the public involved, Proton even launched an online poll back in April this year for people to vote and submit their name suggestions. Over 89,000 people voted and finally, we have the winner. “The letter X is synonymous with Crossover or Sports Utility Vehicles so using it makes it easy to identify the segment this Proton model is from while the number 70 denotes the size/class of the SUV,” said Abdul Rashid Musa, Chief Executive Officer of PROTON Edar.
