How You Can Protect Your Skin From Your Phone: An Interview With Dr Murad

Technology saves and changes lives, and allows us to do things we couldn’t have dreamt of just years ago. But did you know that technology like your mobile phones and computers can also damage your skin? Thankfully, we got in touch with dermatologist Dr Howard Murad who was full of great advice to soothe our skincare anxieties!

FEMALE: Just what is technology doing to our skin?

Dr Murad: Technological skin aggressors include UV rays, pollutants and visible light from our phones, tablets, and computers. These aggressors can damage the skin and cause visible signs of ageing, including uneven skin tone, dullness, and fine lines and wrinkles. High Energy Visible (HEV) light from our phones, tablets, and computers penetrates skin more deeply than UVA and UVB rays.

How can we protect our skin against them?

Dr Murad: Murad has developed a revolutionary, ultra-light 100% mineral sunscreen, City Skin® Age Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 PA++++, with Environmental Protection Technology to shield skin from the 5 main causes of damage that accelerate signs of ageing: UVA, UVB, pollution, blue light from devices, and infrared radiation.

Besides that, our City Skin® Overnight Detox Moisturizer features new plant stem-cell technology, Vitamin C, and highly potent botanicals to detoxify skin, while you sleep, from the toxins that have accumulated during the day.

What are some other skincare ingredients that protect skin?

Dr Murad: A core ingredient found in our new Rapid Resurfacing Peel is Vitamin C which helps fight signs of ageing by brightening skin, evening tone, and helping correct sun damage. A few ingredients found in our City Skin® Age Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 PA++++ include Lutein, a potent antioxidant carotenoid pigment that has been found to protect the skin from High Energy Visible light from electronic screens and Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide which protect against UVA and UVB rays from the Sun.

Do you have any tips on how to care for our skin in this technology-driven age?

Dr Murad: Sunscreen is key! Not only should you wear your sunscreen daily, but you can also eat your sunscreen. Dark leafy greens like spinach are full of antioxidants like polyphenols and carotenoids, which may also naturally protect the skin from sun damage.

Murad’s new City Skin Age Defense Broad Spectrum SPF50 PA++++ mineral sunscreen (RM298), City Skin Overnight Detox Moisturizer (RM398), and Rapid Resurfacing Peel (RM268) are available for purchase online and at all Murad skincare counters in Malaysia.
