Can you share with us about the brand’s DNA?

Smashbox cosmetics was born out of a photo studio company in the heart of Los Angeles where we are constantly try to outdo ourselves by creating gorgeous looks in different lighting. Most importantly we ensure that the environment we work in is laid back and chill for the creative mind to work at its best.

Being in the industry for over 20 years, you’ve work with different skintones, is there a signature look that you gravitate towards?

I’m a big believer in highlighting my client’s current mood.  I try to get to know my clients to gauge her current mood whether she feels like a classic Hollywood A-Lister, or she’s wants in a grungy mood, it’s all about bringing out the best in her. As for current trends, we’re focusing a lot more on lips because most versatile way to change a person’s mood, from dark vampy lips, to a neutral pink.

If we’re looking into delve into Smashbox products, what would five products would you recommend to a newbie for a camera-ready look and why?

Smashbox Cosmetics prides ourselves as the pioneers of primers. With the biggest selection of primers, from face to eyelash, my advice would be choose a primer that would help you with your concerns be it large pores or creasing under the eye after concealer because once you have balanced out your skin, the makeup will go on smoother and stay on longer.

Second, a sweat and humidity resistant foundation especially in a tropical climate such as Malaysia, your foundation may slip and slide. The Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear foundation is made for climates like this, with medium to full coverage, 15 hour wear and transfer proof. It’s even tested in different lighting so you’ll look flawless no matter if you’re indoor or outdoor.

Also the Always On Matte Liquid Lipsticks are a must-have. It’s extremely pigmented and more hydrating than most liquid lipsticks out there. It comes in a variety of shades, so which ever mood you’re in that day, there’s definitely a colour for you.

Next, black eyeliner.  It’s the easiest way to change a look from day to night and the Always On Gel Liner. The pencil doesn’t tug on the eyes, you can use it on the waterline and it’s easy to smudge, but once it set, it’s waterproof. You wouldn’t have to worry about your eyeliner sliding down your face.

Lastly, a good eyebrow completes the look as it frames the face. The Brow Tech To Go is a two-in-one brow product with an angled waterproof pencil on one end and a brow gel on the other. So if you’re sweating, you wouldn’t have to worry about your brows rubbing off.

With Smashbox re-launching in Malaysia, what can we expect from the brand in the near future?

I can’t stop going on about our Always on Liquid Lipstick, it’s literally everything you would want in a liquid lipstick – long-wearing, pigmented and moisturising. Also, The Cover Shot Eye Palettes where we collaborated with Shay Mitchell as the face of the campaign. Everyone loves playing with eyeshadow, but we’ve realized that not everyone uses all 20 shades, so we’ve split them down into specifics – there’s a matte palette, soft shimmers, metallic, smoky palette as we want to meet the needs of the consumers.
