As you walk past a full-length mirror in nothing but your undergarments, you start to examine your body in all its glory. You touch your skin and give it a little squeeze, it reveals the lumps underneath it – cellulite, the bane of our existence…should they be? Well, this British model doesn’t think so!
Charli Howard was how you would picture a typical model would look like, lean and tall, but when she gained a few pounds she was dropped by her modeling agency. If anything it’s the agency’s lost cos Charli is now a well-known, influential model for all girls and also co-founder for the #AllWomenProject foundation.
3 days ago, the model re-posted a body positive image of her bum unretouched with cellulite and all. The post was followed by an inspiring caption that speaks the truth how you should really feel about cellulite and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.
“They say do something each day that scares you, so re-posting this is mine for the day. Despite the fact I speed walk everywhere, squat, run and occasionally do @pure_barre, I’m still left with cellulite. I went to an all-girls’ boarding school and really used to envy the girls in my class who seemingly had none, and whose bodies looked, to me, nothing less than perfect. Whenever I opened magazines, the models and celebrities I saw didn’t have cellulite either – and if they did, they were shamed in the tabloids because of it, or knocked off their perch by nasty journalists who probably have it themselves.” she wrote on Instagram.
“As a result, I felt like my cellulite was shameful, or an oddity. It wasn’t until I got older and saw other women’s bodies that I realised HOW BLOODY NATURAL IT IS. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.Your boyfriend isn’t gonna care if you have it, and if he does, dump him for his mate. Your boyfriend isn’t gonna care if you have it, and if he does, dump him for his mate…”
“Don’t get me wrong – my cellulite isn’t my favourite part of my body, nor is it something I shout from the rooftops about. But I know it doesn’t make me any less ugly or is something I need to feel embarrassed about. So don’t let it make you feel that way, either! In the words of my old pal Kendrick Lamar, “Show me something natural like ass with some stretch marks.”, said Charli who’s post garnered over 4000 likes as of today.
She’s also shared her side rolls to the world with an IDGAF attitude. You go, girl!
Kudos to Charli for inspiring and spreading body positivity to all women out there!
In regards to cellulite, people often have this misconception that only those overweight have cellulite and that’s not even close to the truth. About 98% of individual have them even the skinny and fit. Cellulite is not visible fat stored in your body but it’s actually the disharmonious co-mingling of fiber and the fat. According to Aol.com, Underneath the skin’s surface are fibrous strands which don’t always have fat cells in store. What causes cellulite to look bumpy? It’s caused through the indentation of the fiber strand and the protruding of the trapped bloated fat cells and lymphatics.
Charli’s strong activism boosted comes after she hit the headlines for calling out her modeling agency after she was fired for being “too big” in 2015. She took to her Facebook and expressed her disbelief through a very empowering ‘F*** You’ post.
“I will no longer allow you to dictate to me what’s wrong with my looks and what I need to change in order to be “beautiful” (like losing one fucking inch off my hips), in the hope, it might force you to find me work,”
“In case you hadn’t realised, I am a woman. I am human. I cannot miraculously shave my hip bones down, just to fit into a sample size piece of clothing or to meet ‘agency standards,”
The model signed off the letter with a winning statement saying, “Until (and if) an agency wishes to represent me for myself, my body & the WOMAN I’ve become, give me a call. Until then, I’m off to Nandos.”
