Mama’s Beauty Tips Are the Best!

Team FEMALE shares their Mom’s beauty tips that’s worked.

We’ve rounded up some words of wisdom by the main superwoman in our lives because, let’s face it, they don’t say ‘mamma knows best’ for nothing.

ALYA, EDITORIAL ASSISTANT

“Before we leave the house, my mother would always remind me to, at least, add some colour on my face. Be it a touch of blusher or lipstick, looking presentable is key even if we’re just heading out to the grocer’s.”

Tip! Why pick one or the other when you can do both? Match your cheeks to your lips with a light wash of the same colour for flattering yet natural results.

SARAH, DEPUTY BEAUTY EDITOR

“My Mum says to always, always consume honey when you’re sick.”

Tip! Raw honey is naturally antibacterial and soothing so it’s perfect for giving your complexion a huge boost as well. Use it on its own as a mask or mix it with baking soda for an easy DIY exfoliator.

ARIELLE, EDITORIAL ASSISTANT

“For a really natural finish, my mum taught me to use an eyeshadow brush to lightly stipple lipstick or a lip stain on.”

Tip! Similarly, you can also use a damp makeup sponge to control the colour payoff and achieve a ‘wine stain’ effect on your lips by swiping it directly over the bullet and dabbing it on

JOAN, SENIOR FASHION WRITER

“For better skin, my mother makes sure that I drink either oatmeal with nuts and chia seeds or veggie juice (much to my disdain) every morning, and then warm water with lemon juice after dinner.”

Tip! Oats are amazing for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and can be incorporated into many DIY remedies. If you soak a handful and squeeze it in a bowl, the excess can be used as a toner whilst the damp oats make for a great exfoliator.

TAMMY, EDITORIAL ASSISTANT

“When I was younger, she used to tell me to try and sleep without air-conditioning as it’ll keep my skin from looking dry and flaky in the morning. When I started following her advice, I definitely saw the improvement on my face!”

Tip! If you can’t go a night without air-conditioning, make sure you slather on a deeply hydrating night moisturiser or mask to boost your skin’s natural recovery and keep dryness at bay during the night.

JOANNA, SPECIAL PROJECTS WRITER

“My older sister would always advise me to eat or drink bird’s nest to maintain a smooth and youthful complexion for as long as possible. Nowadays, we even buy bird’s nest-infused skincare!”

Tip! Believe it or not, bird’s nest is made out of solidified saliva produced by male swallows and offers benefits like promoting a healthy immune system, stimulating cell regeneration and maintaining a youthful, glowing complexion.
