The amount of talent on Instagram is astounding. Just open up your app and you’ll be greeted with an impressive wealth of self-taught budding beauty bloggers and makeup artists showing off skills that can rival professionals out there. Canadian makeup artist Mimi Choi is one of them, but she’s a little different.
Instead of the usual brows on fleek, on-point contour, and flawless highlight that we’ve come to expect from Instagram, Mimi creates mind-blowing optical illusions on herself like this:
“When I do illusions now, I draw my inspiration mostly from my surroundings, photography, paintings, and emotions. I try not to look at other makeup artists’s work too much and challenge myself to produce original, unique work,” the 31-year-old artist told Allure. “My main goal each time I do a new look is to beat myself from yesterday because I’m the biggest critic and competition to myself.”
She admits it’s gotten harder to impress herself as her skills grew, but the rest of the Internet are certainly is!
It’s even trippier when she moves!
I can’t even.
Of course, it’s not all body horror. Check out this amazing geometric look:
Her looks aren’t just limited to her face– she’s turned her entire arm into a creepily realistic-looking piece of sushi.
How does she do it? With a masterful understanding of how to trick the eye with the clever manipulation of light and shadow.
“Key to doing this type of #trickart is using the color black to mimic space and depth, and using light colors to highlight edges to create the illusion of height, volume and separation,” Mimi explains in an Instagram post. “Taking your photo and video at the right angle is also crucial in creating an impactful illusion. If you truly understand the concept of highlighting and shading, I believe you can create anything on any canvas!”
Mimi does conventional makeup looks as well, and they’re just as beautiful!
