FEMALE Beauty Faves: Vincent Oquendo’s Secret To Travel-Proof Skin

One of the things I love most about skincare is that basically everyone has figured out a little something that works for them. Which means, sometimes you pick up the best beauty tips from the most unexpected sources.

Okay, so maybe Vincent Oquendo, Shiseido’s Celebrity Makeup Artist and beauty icon in his own right, isn’t really an unexpected source when it comes to beauty know-how. So in this case, perhaps it would be more accurate to say it was an unexpected time.

We had just wrapped up an interview in conjunction with the launch of Shiseido’s latest Synchro Skin Self-Refreshing Collection, and we were talking casually about Vincent’s intense travelling schedule. After flying into KL just a few days ago, he was about to jet off for New York in time for NYFW.

That’s when I noticed: he didn’t look like someone who had been through so many brutal cross-continental flights! Specifically, his skin looked perfect. Glowy, smooth, well-rested– more like my skin on a good day, rather than a skin of a frequent jet-setter.

I couldn’t help myself. I had to ask: how did he keep his skin looking so good??

Vincent laughed delightedly and pointed out two “blemishes” on his cheek– which I didn’t even notice, to be honest. And then he shared the incredibly simple secret to his travel-proof good skin: regular physical exfoliation.

“I just use a scrub,” he said. “I like the Shiseido WASO Polisher. I also use the Ultimune eye cream and serum as well, but the Polisher is the most important. As long as I can get the dead skin off my face, I know my skin will behave.”

It makes sense. Regular exfoliation will clear your skin of the buildup of dead skin cells, oil, and other gunk that accumulates from spending long hours in planes and changing weather conditions, making it more likely to stay calm and happy despite the stress travel puts it through. There’s also the added benefit of your other skincare working better when there’s none of that gunk to get in the way.

Of course, be sure to pick a gentle physical scrub. In this case, the Shiseido WASO Soft+Cushy Polisher fits the bill: it’s a skin-refining exfoliating polish with a gentle tofu-like texture and features a soft comforting scent– perfect to alleviate the fatigue and stress of travel!
