Last week, Gucci revealed its new lipstick collections, the first from a new Gucci Makeup line created under a contemporary manifesto of beauty by Gucci’s Creative Director Alessandro Michele.
That’s right – it’s a lipstick collection designed and brought to life by a fashion icon, and the lipsticks are more than a testament to that. “Lipstick is the most beautiful object you can find inside a handbag,” Alessandro Michele told WWD.
There are 58 shades across 3 lines, each with a different finish. Rouge à Lèvres Voile is light and sheer, while Rouge à Lèvres Satin is creamy and boldly pigmented. Baume à Lèvres Lip Balm is, as the name suggests, a moisture-rich balm with a soft glowy finish.
And the packaging! As expected from Gucci, each lipstick case feels like a work of art: from the Rouge à Lèvres Voile’s vintage 1950’s-inspired floral print, to the solid engraved golden tube of the Rouge à Lèvres Satin , and the lacquered turquoise tube of the Baume à Lèvres, the designs remind you that these are luxury designer items you’ll want on your vanity, in your bag, and in your hand.
“Makeup is something poetic and fleeting that you can add to your face, changing or highlighting something about yourself. I find it an almost magical language, strongly linked to other details I use for the expression of the self, such as jewelry and a hairstyle. Of all these aspects needed to emphasize or underline an aspect of ourselves, makeup is the most immediate and the oldest way, making it the most fascinating.” – Alessandro Michele
Driving home the glorious vintage homage of the lipsticks is the campaign that launched them – you could be forgiven for thinking that these print ads from the 70’s, until you notice that the models donning the lipsticks aren’t your airbrushed beauty queens of the 70’s.
Dani Miller, the gap-toothed punk singer of Surfbort, and models Mae Lapres, Achok Majak and Ellia Sophia Coggins show off the lipsticks in a campaign shot by Martin Parr that celebrates individuality, imperfections and the creativity of self-expression through makeup.
