8 Reasons Why We Love The Dyson Supersonic

Move over conventional hairdryers, and make room on your vanity table for a newbie that is on everyone’s lips and will impact your life. In three words, the Dyson Supersonic is fast, focused and intelligent.

Conventional hairdryers can be bulky and difficult to manoeuvre. They can also blast air at high temperatures, which will not only cause extreme heat damage to your locks but also risk your hair being sucked into and trapped in the filter (sounds all too familiar, right?)! Despite these well-known limitations, it’s surprising that hairdryer designs have not advanced in more than 60 years… until the Dyson Supersonic came into the picture, that is.

Frustrated with all the limitations we’ve had to put up with over the years, Dyson involved a team of 103 engineers to carry out major R&D that spanned a good four years. The result? A stunning and iconic beauty tool that will make a difference in your life! Here are eight reasons why we love the Dyson Supersonic:

Did you know that Dyson invested almost £50 million (about RM280 million) to develop the Supersonic? This includes building a bespoke, state-of-the-art Hair Laboratory dedicated to research, design and development – aka investigating the science of hair (more on that later).

As far as first impressions go, you can’t deny that the Supersonic is a piece of art, and with its smart, eye-catching design, you’ll be half-sold at the mere sight of it (you’ve got to admit that at 600 prototypes later, this one is a perfect accessory for classy flatlays and fun pic for your IG feed!). Read on and chances are, you might be running to your nearest store to lay your hands on one!

Dyson engineers studied hair from roots to tips to get a full understanding of performance, including how it reacts to stresses, how to keep it healthy and even how to style it. Over four years, they tested the machine on seven different hair types (Japanese/Asian, Other/Asian, fine-straight Caucasian, medium-straight Caucasian, medium-wavy Caucasian, bleached medium-brown Caucasian and mixed ethnicity) and built test rigs, which mechanically stimulate hair-drying techniques, which can differ around the world. To date, over 1,625 kilometres of real human hair (roughly spanning across Singapore to Bangkok… wow!) have been used in testing. Can you say w-o-w?!

Dyson Supersonic is powered by the patented Dyson digital motor V9, and it is the only hair dryer in the world with a motor in its handle. Rotating at 110,000 rpm, the V9 was created in-house by a team of over 15 motor engineers specifically for this machine. And at only 49 grams, Dyson’s smallest, lightest and most-advanced digital motor is up to eight times faster than other hairdryer motors and half the weight too!

Because it’s engineered to be powerful yet compact, it is small enough to be positioned in the handle rather than at the head, translating to a good balance between the two parts. Also, if you frequently dry your hair, you’ll find that the hand-balance tests have been exceptionally rewarding cos your hand won’t feel burdened by the weight of the Supersonic at all!

Traditional hairdryers sometimes have a weak airflow, meaning they’re slow and you’ll need more time to dry your hair, which leads to hair turning brittle, dull and dry in the long run. But using Dyson’s patented Air Multiplier technology, the volume of air drawn into the motor is thrice amplified and produces a high-pressure, high-velocity jet of air. So, for instance, if you usually take about 10-12 minutes to dry your hair, you’re able to cut your hair-drying time to only five to six minutes. How’s that for #timewellsaved to do more #HOTDs instead?

Some conventional hairdryers can reach extreme temperatures, especially when held close to your head. Not only does this cause extreme heat damage to your hair, but often you might even catch a burnt smell (gasp!). Thankfully, the Dyson Supersonic has intelligent heat control, which helps ensure that hair isn’t exposed to excessive temperatures. A glass bead thermistor measures the temperature 20 times a second and transmits this data to the microprocessor, which intelligently controls the patented, double-stacked heating element.

TIP: To score healthy, shiny locks, use a blow-dry serum or cream beforehand so you’ll get heat protection and hair’s less damaged, brittle and dry.

Dyson Supersonic has four heat settings, three airflow settings and a cold shot all clearly shown on LED indicators, the last of which is great for your guy’s hair. It also comes with three precisely-engineered magnetic attachments, with 16 patents pending, that can be rotated 360 degrees to further control airflow precisely and allow you to achieve various styles.

The smoothing nozzle dries hair gently, using smooth, wide air that lets you dry and style simultaneously. The diffuser disperses air evenly around each curl and stimulates natural drying while helping to reduce frizz and improve definition. As for the styling concentrator, it gives off fast, precise airflow for controlled styling, one section at a time. That’s not surprising at all since Dyson worked with renowned hairstylists to help you get that much-coveted salon-style blow-dry at home, any time!

BONUS: Being magnetic, each nozzle is easy to attach and adjust. Better still – thanks to its Heat Shield technology, the hot hair is contained within a sandwich of cold air, allowing the attachments to remain cool to the touch!

Have you ever wanted to blow-dry your hair while your other half was still soundly asleep and you’re afraid to wake him up? Well, with the Dyson Supersonic, you can blow-dry your hair any time of the day – or night! Acoustically tuned, the motor produces one inaudible frequency, even when spinning at such a high speed. A total of 4,865 prototypes later, Dyson engineers managed to push one tone of the 13-blade motor impeller (instead of the usual 11) to a sound frequency that’s beyond the audible range for humans. Also, a rubber isolation mount prevents the motor from vibrating against the inside of the handle, reducing the transfer of noise between the motor and the case. How’s that for a new kind of cool?!

Hello, peace of mind! The Dyson Supersonic is tested to a breaking point and built to last, against any mishaps that you can think of at home, and every machine has been put through a rigorous, relentless testing programme. Each one is punched, pummelled, beaten and bashed – but a word of caution: just don’t drop it in water!

During its development, this super-hairdryer underwent thousands of hours of testing to find out just how durable it is, including using a ‘carousel’ to test whether or not hair could clog the dryer’s filter, and another to test the hairdryer’s resilience to vigorous repetitive motion. With those in mind, you’ll still get a two-year warranty, plus an easy-to-understand manual that contains FAQs, so you’ll know exactly what to do with all the accessories found in the box, and just when your stunning device needs cleaning to remove any dust and debris to keep it in top form!

The Dyson Supersonic is available at Sephora and selected retailers such as ESH in Bangsar Shopping Centre, TBM in Bangsar Village 1 and Robinsons The Gardens Mall, for RM1,799.
