Treat your pits like your face!
There’s always been a divide in the way we treat our face and everything else below the neck. And it’s a good practice: your facial skin does need more careful care than skin elsewhere, but sometimes taking inspiration from your skincare routine can be the best thing you ever do for your other bits.
So here’s my proposal: if you have underarms that are rough from shaving, and bumpy or even painful with in-grown hairs, try adopting some skincare techniques and see if they do the trick! Here are 4 skincare practices that’ll keep your pits as smooth and happy as your face.
1. Exfoliate in the shower
Exfoliation keeps dead skin and in-grown hairs at bay. An easy way to do this is with loofahs or the rough towels made specifically for exfoliating skin in the shower. In-shower exfoliation is a common practice in Japanese and Korean cultures, so you can easily find these in Daiso, in varying coarseness options.
2. Use a chemical exfoliant
Acids aren’t just for your face. Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) clears clogs and is an anti-inflammatory, while Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) also get rid o f dead skin that can contribute to clogs and roughness. What does that all mean? Smooth, healthy armpits! Bonus: the low pH nature of these acids also kills any odor-causing bacteria, so that’s a win-win.
3. Oil cleanse
Imagine not washing off your sunscreen and makeup at the end of the day! Just like the things you put on your face, deodorant and anti-perspirants can be hard to get off with regular soap. So take a cue from your skincare routine and do a double cleanse with an oil cleanser before heading into the shower! Then, soap away as usual, or use a bit of face scrub if your deodorant is really stubborn.
After all that scrubbing and washing, your skin deserves a little TLC. Give it a shot of soothing hydration with aalight, watery, hydrating toner. Anything that works for the 7-Skin method will work great on your pits too, without feeling overly greasy or sticky.
